I recently saw fields of blooming poppies in the southern Boso region of Chiba Prefecture. The long stems, crowned with delicate petals that looked like translucent colored paper, swayed in the wind as if waving at someone. Below is my selection of quotable quotes for March, a month for all sorts of farewells.

"I am happy that I was finally able to fulfill my 60-year dream to study," said Takayuki Fukui, 78, who graduated from Meiwa Senior High School in Nagoya. A retired train driver with the former Japanese National Railways, Fukui was past 70 when he started a junior high school program at a night school and advanced to an evening program at Meiwa. "I've never given up because of my age," noted Fukui, whose next move is to go on to a university.

Aiko Okazaki attended the graduation ceremony at Doshisha University in a wheelchair. She became paralyzed from the waist down in the 2005 train derailment disaster on the JR Takarazuka Line. "Because of the accident, I have more things I can't do now than what I can still do," she said. "But I want to make up for this by finding what I can do." Okazaki will start living on her own in Tokyo as a Sony Corp. employee.

At the Nogeyama Zoo in Yokohama, Modori, a male lion, died at the ripe old age of 23 years and 8 months. His keeper, Ko Kawata, noted: "This is rare for animals, but Modori continued to show his determination to live even after he became permanently incapacitated."

After it was announced that the Tokyo-Osaka sleeper express Ginga, which means galaxy, would go out of service, collectors of railway paraphernalia started pinching the Ginga's car number plates, forcing the operators to make do with paper substitutes.
