VOX POPULI: Typhoon reminds us of our vulnerability
The Kumano Kodo ancient pilgrimage routes that thread through the rugged Kii mountain range have old stone-paved paths to stop travelers getting mired in mud. The ancient stones tell of the many pilgrims who have toured the sacred sites and of the heavy rain the area is known for. Annual precipitation is about 3,000 millimeters, roughly double that of Tokyo. Yusuke Nawa wrote the following haiku: "Thick fog and heavy mountain rain/ Traveling across Kumano."

Approaching shrines and trees seen through a mist of autumn rain must be a solemn, aesthetically pleasing sight. I am talking about drizzling rain. When more than a half of annual precipitation falls in just a few days, there is nothing aesthetically pleasing about it. A torrent of muddy water caused by Typhoon No. 12 coursed through the holy mountain range, which has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.
The typhoon also left deep claw marks in Nachikatsuura, Wakayama Prefecture, the site of Kumano Nachi Taisha, one of Japan's holy places. The area is a tourist destination known for tuna fishing, hot springs and the Nachi Falls, which boast a 133-meter drop. The name Nachi is said to derive from "nanchi," or precipitous land. Villages in the mountains were hit so hard by the storm that they are beyond recognition.
The case of Nachikatsuura Mayor Shinichi Teramoto, who lost his wife and daughter, is particularly heartrending. Teramoto, 58, stayed overnight at the town office but received a call from his 51-year-old wife before dawn on Sept. 4 calling for help. Tragically, the call was cut off. His daughter Saki, 24, who worked at the town tourist association, was scheduled to exchange betrothal gifts with her fiance's family that day. The mayor is commanding relief operations, fighting back his grief.
At the time of writing, about 90 people are dead or missing across the nation. Because the typhoon moved north at a slug's pace, damp air from the south stayed over the Kii Peninsula for several days, causing record rains. The number of victims is the second highest since Typhoon No. 23 in 2004. Three days after that storm, the Chuetsu earthquake hit.
Six months after the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, which claimed 20,000 lives, natural catastrophe has struck again, not from the Earth's crust but from the sky. Although the damage is on an altogether different scale, there is no difference in the pain and grief of people whose futures have been abruptly shattered. A deluge beyond our imagination fell on our disaster-prone archipelago. Once again, we must prepare ourselves for disaster.

--The Asahi Shimbun, Sept. 6
