起初，作者试图出版这首歌曲时遇到了些许麻烦。
一位出版商曾说：
“（拒绝出版）并非因为它是 一个忧伤的调子，而是因为该曲之中流露出的那种魄人心魂的绝望情绪，我以为这对任何听者均 无益处。”
(It is not that the song is sad, there is a sort of terrible compelling despair about it. I don't think it would do anyone any good to hear a song like that.)
据Cincinatti Journal of Ceremonial Magick》创刊号上 MacDonald 的文章所述，
1936年2月布达佩斯警察调查过当地一起制鞋匠 Joseph Keller 的自杀案。
他们发现 Keller 留下了一份遗书，
其中抄录了那时刚刚流行起来的这首歌的歌词。
某份遗书中抄录一段歌词本身或许并非是一桩离奇之事，
离奇的是在后来的岁月中此歌据信要对超过100人的死亡事件负直接的责任
（象“Hundreds of Hungarians Kill Themselves under the Influence of A Song” 这样近乎夸张的字眼曾经出现于纽约时报的头条）。
很多自杀者临死之前总以这样或那样的方式与这首歌发生联系。
在匈牙利，有两名自杀者是在听吉普塞人演奏该曲时饮弹自尽的。
“Er ist kein Musiker - er ist nur em Genie”
(He is no musician - he is just a genius) ，
意指 Seress 够不上一个音乐家的称号，
他仅仅是个天才。
关于 Seress 自杀的原因，
一种说法是他感到再也作不出象《黑色的星期天》那样的好曲子了，
因此在长期的绝望之中选择了死亡。
另传作者在临终前内疚的忏悔道：
“没想到，这首乐曲给人类带来了如此多的灾难，
让上帝在另一个世界来惩罚我的灵魂吧！”
